Well said Templar, you sure know your guns

My choices :

Home Defense - Shotgun
Carry - 40/45 Glock compact, if budget is a problem Armscor is good enough
Sports - 45 since it is what I'm currently using but the gun of choice nowadays is 40

Guys,

I need help on owning a gun. Twice na kami pinasok sa bahay ng mga kawatan, nawala yung carpentry power tools ko, and other items, luckily di naman pinasok yung loob ng bahay. I reported it to the police but I never got any feedback. Prior to this incident, two years earlier, pinasok din isa sa mga apartments namin. I do not own any gun at the moment, but I'm really thinking of getting one because I have a wife and kid to protect, wala talaga kami kalaban laban pag pinasok kami. Problem is, I'm out of work right now, nag resign ako last year sa work ko. Would it be difficult for me to own a gun? Ano ba yung process? how much would I have to shell out for a gun + license fees. I do not need a PTC, pang bahay lang talaga. Hope someone can help me.

By the way, pwede ko ba tepokin yung mga magnanakaw pag nasa loob ng compund ko? Ano implications?

Thanks.

Thanks Templar, agree with your basic data. In the North Luzon political scene, we live in a world where PTCs are not really respected, and M16A1's and even A3's are common in civilian/political hands. We are not big fans of pistols since given for us most usage for the gun would be in the field not in the house. Talagang sira ka na to try to get inside the houses there, papapakin kang buhay. Thus I go to bed with at least a Mossberg shotgun, Marine version, with alternating buckshot and single slug loads and of course boxes and boxes of ammunition. M16A1's too, if I can borrow some from concerned relatives. But practice, practice, practice talaga.
I am thinking of resurrecting one my grandad's old winchester 22 LR magnum (aka "baboyramo") rifles for cheap rifle practice. We dont get much 223 ammo nowadays since the NPAs aren't there anymore and we have no reason to ask for too big an allocation, so M16 firing is a bit difficult. Know anyone in the gunsmithing business who can restore it (broken slide, and carrier, but the barrel is still oiled up and fresh)? The gun has a long, distinguished, and bloody history, so I don't mind paying for "good service" The springs need to be renewed, and the sights re-sighted from hard use (pinang bugbug itong baril against some juramentado). It is of course, legal, and is one of the few guns we have which are legit.
After I restore it, I might decide to lug it around my car in manila if I get the PTT done up. Not as smooth as a handgun, but this rifle has saved lives before I was born, and might save some again. Can't lug hi powered since baka mahuli pa, so I need it to be legit like this.
any contact numbers, adresses, etc will be appreciated.

Guys, Ive been a gun owner for 11 yrs now and law-abiding. Ive been reading gun threads , one thing that always bothers me is one day some yoyo policitican will declare a "total gun ban" , meaning surrender all your legal firearms ala martial law. Such situations do exist, example : Australian govt ask all to surrender gun for destruction, US tightening gun law leading to gunless society. even our Marcos gunban etc. What would most local gun owners do? just surrender our guns like that? or hide the gun & declare it lost? How far do we follow govt gun law? We have a 2004 presidential candidate who'a rabid anti-gun, he made gun lic & ptc renewal tough & expensive for us some years ago , clue=ex-chief pnp. Sometimes owning loose gun is a sensible security insurance. Anyone remember the early 90's Los Angeles riot? only those with guns are spare the crime wave & looting.

Pareng Templar

Ikaw pala presidente dito, meron akong Walther PPK/S 380.

    Ano ba activities natin dito?

Activities? pwede tayo mag-firing EB .....

...... pero kung meron tayong at least 10 attendees, I can ask Armscor to prepare a basic marksmanship course exclusively for us (lecture on Sat, firing on Sun) complete with completion certificates where they will put your marksmanship rating. No written exams ha, just your ranking (novice, sharpshooter, marksman, etc.) based on your score sa shooting practicals. I took it in 2001 and it was a great experience for a beginner. Cost before was P500 w/ lunch na. Depende sa grupo, sessions usually last 4-5 hours/day, pero sa shooting after you complete the marksmanship course you can shoot all you want!

Btw, medyo malayo ang Armscor. It's in Parang, Marikina .... but when you go there on Saturdays and Sundays tapos may shooting event, parang fiesta dun ..... kasama ng shooters pamilya nila tapos picnic sila dun! :D

Im currently looking for a gun, pag may nakuha ako sali ako d2.mahigpit pa ba sa issuance ng PTC?

Read page 1 of the thread for the PTC requirements. :)

Hindi naman mahigpit sa issuance basta kumpleto ka sa requirements at pumasa ka sa interview (regarding the threat to your life that you have to allege to be given a PTC) :D

..... sabi ng iba, and this I haven't verified, it's easier to get a PTC daw if you're a provincial resident lalo na sa mga rebel-infested areas kasi dali i-justify yung threat to life and madali din daw kumuha ng certification from the regional PNP commander. Since nationwide ang PTC, a good number of people are applying from their provinces.

First, it must be emphasized that you can provide home security without owning a gun - like alarm systems, dogs and guards.

A decent alarm system would cost you about 50K (incl. installation) and this is just the trip-wire type (not motion sensor w/c can cost you upwards of 100K). Cheapest is to install locks, bolts, weld steel bars on entry points, and then put on more locks :P

Another cheap alternative is to have a dog ..... not an attack dog like a doberman or german shepherd but a loud barker like a labrador. Meron din ibang mas maliliit na barkers. This would probably cost you at least 5K (for undocumented dogs i.e., no PCCI registration). May pet ka pa! :D

About gun ownership, it's a big responsibility! Insofar as gun purchase is concerned, ok lang for now that you're jobless kasi they will ask naman your ITR for last year. As to the process, go the gun dealer and choose your gun. The dealer usually asks for a downpayment then will take care of facilitating your license application for a fee. The balance is payable upon release of your license, at which time you also get your gun. Check page 3 of this thread for gun choices and price range.

About your last question, the answer is NO!!!!

Generally, mere entry into your compound or house is not enough. THERE MUST BE A CLEAR AND IMMINENT THREAT ON LIFE (and not just on property). The threat may be directed to you or any resident in your house. THERE IS NO OTHER MEANS TO REPEL THE THREAT EXCEPT TO USE YOUR GUN, AND THE USE OF YOUR GUN IS A PROPORTIONATE RESPONSE TO THE THREAT. How these general rules will apply depends on each and every situation.

LC,

Pareho pala tayo.... my family is also from the north and my cousins are active in politics. When I told them to get licenses/MOs/MRs for their pistols and long arms e pinagtawanan ako :P . ...... and I saw their point during the last election when ballot boxes were starting to get hijacked on the way to the capitolyo ..... pero di pa rin ako humawak ng mahaba, sila lang at baka ma-disbar pa ko. :D

Maganda yang Winchester 22LR Magnum mo! Sa gunsmithing kasi, I only trust Armscor and Tony Pascual (for pistols) and Rogunz (for rifles esp. 22s). Rogunz Metal and Woodcraft is located at 457 M.L. Quezon St., Lower Bicutan, Taguig, Metro Manila 1632, or Giron Metal Craft, 1184 Augusto Francisco St., Malate, Tel: 523-0202 & 521-0927.

Rogunz and Giron are actually air rifle specialists but are also very competent to handle 22s.

Btw, just remember that in Gun Bans during elections, ALL GUNS are forbidden including 22s ..... legally speaking that is :P
