Jo6789, no faults here. We are all just trying to help diba.

Wow, you have a great job, you work directly with the people who are in need of help, you must be a sympathetic and caring person.

I saw an Ad on Fox, they were advertising storage of cord blood from newborns, the thing about this is that you would have to suspect that your child will have some need for his/her cord blood in the future.

according to that documentary po where i've heard this matter,

the parent of the newborn where the stem cell came from can benefit

from it...

well, i just wanna know lng nmmn po on which kind of stem cell

we could count on as we're already on the stage 2 of a loved one's colon cancer...

anyone can benefit from this cord stem cell but usually they are using this for leukemias and other blood disorders. for solid tumor chemotheraphy plus surgery radiotheraphy is still the best choice in treating such ( paging our oncologist here tama po ba ito )., I have attended a lecture which briefly touch on the stem cell that are implanted on the cancer site then this stem cell will be recognize by the body as its own that is without any rejection from the host then they will repair and will mature and grow as healthy cell but again this is still an ongoing research and will take years before na maging realidad ito, as for our institution just want to give an idea ( best is to consult your oncologist )..we are using the folfox erbitux protocol ( for colon cancer ) it is a combination of cetuximab, oxaliplatin and 5 FU..I believe na maraming magagandang ospital at magagaling na mga doctor dyan sa atin, lets just pray and hope na malagpasan ng iyong mahal sa buhay ang krisis na ito...

It's hard if people are uneducated about this matter.

Generally, they think that stem cell research is like playing God.

What they fail to realize is that, the benefits of stem cell won't make you immortal

It'll just give you a better life, not an everlasting one.

Just my two cents. -_-

sorry to hear that ms beautiful... I really hope your nephew would get the right treatment for him... may I ask kung ano case ng nephew mo? and saan siya nagpapa RT? ang RT kase is pinapatay ang mga cancer cells it is indeed possible na hindi mag respond sa chemo.... if your nephew is declared CA-free

(hopefully soon) you still have to give him check ups every now and then baka kase....

may suggestion lang me here sa mga taong may CA...if your family cannot afford the treatment, try to ask for assistance sa PCSO they do help patients na cant afford.... during these times, hindi na dapt mahiya its life we are talking here... sana po nakatulong ako sa inyo...

(am not a doctor ha, but i'd still like to share our family's experience with the hope that it will help other people)

anyway... to answer your question... sa St. Luke's nagpa-radiation therapy ang nephew ko... we opted for the 'specialized' one (linear something? sorry nalimot ko na) since the tumor is in his chestbone and regular radiation would damage his internal organs... esply since he was only 3 years old... 31 days cost P200,000 aside from P800/day for the anesthesiologist and i forgot na how much yung professional fee nung radiologist...

the PCSO thing can be helpful...we also appealed to them kasi nga we were running out of funds na... the thing is... they only really give you a certificate...para syang promissory note to the hospital.... and hindi sya retroactive so you can't get back the CASH you deposited (and believe me, walang mangyayari pag walang deposit).. dun sa P75,000 na nakuha naming certificate, we were only able to utilize mga P25,000 kasi the certificate was awarded towards the end of the radiation treatment na (halos araw-araw na radiation yun ha, and my nephew required an anesthesiologist kasi nga bata and hindi talaga sya pede gumalaw...)

but that's just the tip of the iceberg...

st. luke's diagnosed my nephew's case as GERM-CELL CARCINOMA.... and we had him treated for a year at PCMC... chemo, radiation, two surgeries to remove the tumor.... but the tumor just kept growing back...

his doctors advised us to seek help abroad na nga.... and to cut the long story short, help from abroad resulted in us finding out that my nephew was MISDIAGNOSED...

what he actually had was EWING'S SARCOMA, a totally different cancer... and some say he may have been the first to be correctly diagnosed with that cancer in the country...

in the end, it proved too late for my nephew... he passed away just last Dec 27... anyone can read his story at http://intimesofpain.blogspot.com (with stories of our frustration on the medical/health system in this country of ours)

PEEJAY ONG.... i hope you won't take this the wrong way, but stem cell, at best, is still in a very early stage without guarantees and supporting studies, what's more, the few stem cell procedures that could already be done are not offered in the Philippines yet (and i am assuming you're from here)... it gives people hope but it's still not an established thing to pin one's hopes on... if you really love the person who has stage 2 colon cancer, then you and his family will work with his doctors... if you have doubts about the suggested surgery...then get a second opinion... but if 2 or 3 well-respected specialists have posed the same, or similar, treatment procedures, you or someone else or the sick person himself SHOULD stand your ground and get the recommended procedure asap... also, feel free to utilize GOOGLE to arm yourself with information...

surgery IS scary... that's why it's important that you arm yourself with information and consult with your doctors, or seek second opinion, so you can make informed decisions....

but avoiding surgery just because you, or any of your loved ones, is scared.... that's just plain killing you...

if it's a matter of money.... appeal to charity programs being offered by some medical institutions... capitalize on what PCSO, or TV networks, or electoral candidates can offer.... appeal to strangers' kindness... seek the help of NGOs... i, of course, cannot say that it would be easy... but there are still a lot of people who ARE kind... and people (or God) are more likely to help people who are helping themselves...

Goliath,

It seems that you will benefit from genetic counselling. It can be done already in the Philippines. There are problems in a particular gene such as a mutation which cause the fmily trait of cancer in your famly. There is what we call a genetic screening for a particular cancer. If you carry that trait then you can be more aggressive in your treatment. Kung absent naman sa iyo yung genetic problem, then you most likely have a lesser risk of contracting the disease.

Consider doing genetic counselling, it will be your best defense.

any update/ breakthrough po about the stem cell research?

am damn interested on this one...

thanks so much po...!

Peejay,

Colon Cancer is a relatively friendly cancer as far as the stage of your loved one. Stage II is still considered early. I am sure he was given chemotherapy as it provides increase benefit for survival (up to 90%). Chemotherapy for Colon Cancer is not as "toxic" as the ones which lay people commonly perceive. Wlang significant side effects ito like vomitting and hair loss.

I believe that your loved one will survive. They will survive more than they expect. But I think what is important is his or her quality of life. And this part will depend on their family support. Hang on, Keep the faith.

Easy

PS.With regards to stem cell use in colon cancer, malayo pa ang connection nito. Everything in stem cell research is in the infancy stage now especially when the US goverment slashed its funding in favor of research bio-terrorism. I belive China and other European countries are better off in stem cell research than in the US.

Peejay,

Don't get me wrong. Surgery is still the mainstay of treatment in Colon Cancer, chemotherapy is given afterwards. There is no single effective treatment.

My mom hav a renal cancer, diagnosed a year ago. I saw her stomach open while she was unconcious in operating room. They found out na its too difficult pa to removed ung cease b un,about more than 5" yta. I dont know, bkit hndi nila n-detect agad nung ngp-ultrasound bfore ung mother ko.sbi mtutunaw pa ng gamot..until nung sumakit na..ska lng nlaman na malaki na pla ung bukol nya.

until now..chemo theraphy p cia. Sobrang mahal.PCSO helps a lot.pero un lng,after 2 moths pa n-rerelease ung prang certifc8 for chemo.

Wla cia lging ganang kumain kya lging mahina. She's so healthy as in mataba b4 and now..super payat na nya.

Since my mom was diagnosed,my life was never been the same anymore.I'm paranoid lgi.Iyakin nrin lgi.

Don't know wat kind of help pa i could extend for her. :(

Hi Sha

I'm affraid chemo lang talaga ang mabibigay sa mom mo ngayon. I would presume kaya di naoperahan mom mo ay dahil malaki or extensive ang involvement nung "bukol" nya. O kaya dahil sa may kalat or metastasis na sya sa iba parte ng katawan. We're still not sure how much help that would provide in terms of total cure. With regards to pamamayat at pagkawalang gana kumain, maari parte yon ng pagkakaroon ng cancer o kaya side effect ng chemotherapy.

This the reality of cancer patients. Treatment options sometimes do not provide complete cure but merely extension ng lifespan or improvement sa quality of life. But at least we're giving them a fighting chance instead of just giving up on them and pabayaan na lang na walang gagawin.

Understandable yng nararamdaman mo. It really can be too much stress and strain. But you have to be strong for her.

Metastasis is the spread of the tumor to other parts of the body away from the original tumor e.g. lungs, liver or brain. When this happens, the cancer is stage 4 is practicaly impossible to treat. But if malaki lang yung tumor without involvement of other organs, minsan chemotherapy is given to make it smaller and probably can be removed by surgery later on.
