Abortion: When Is It Not A Sin?

Recommended Posts

How about eugenic abortion?

Some ethicists dislike the argument that abortion should be allowed where the baby, if born, would suffer from physical or mental handicaps.

They say that allowing this as a reason for abortion is offensive to disabled people; because it implies that they, and their lives, are less worthwhile than the lives of 'normal' people.

They say that it is just plain wrong to say that one life is less valuable than another. ^_^

Well there are instances that abortion would be the only option. These are cases wherein the benefit outweighs the negative effects. Like for instance, a mother having a high-risk pregnancy, or a situation wherein the pregnancy aggravated a certain illness that the woman have. The choices are: keep the child, yet after childbirth there is a certainty that the mother would die and the chance of the child to survive is 50/50 (since the mother is ill, the baby would definitely not in good shape as well); or abort the pregnancy, the mother's condition would be reverted and be saved. So would it be the baby, or the mother?

Another example: a mother was pregnant, but then she contracted measles/german measles during her pregnancy. At the time of the ultrasound the baby was found to be missing limbs, have an abnormal heartbeat and even if the child survive, the child would be expected to live only for a short lifespan, say a few months. Would you continue or would you like to abort the baby?

There are a lot of issues regarding abortion. I am a nurse, and I myself don't see abortion as a good solution, but if it is the only choice, especially if it is to save a life, then why not?

It is just an opinion. :)
