Ok, due to the number of dental related questions being posted in the Medical thread, shinta requested that I make a dental thread. Any questions or discussions concerning the topic should be posted here.

Shinta, this thread is dedicated to you, bro!

Another question, this one's from me:
My wife had her braces inserted years ago. We can't go back to her dentist because his place's too far... sa sta mesa pa. We consulted a dentist friend and she told us she can have the braces removed but my wife would have to use a retainer and it would cost P10T... question is: can we forego with the retainer and just have it removed?

Thanks!

shinta.

It depends. Retainers are used to prevent the teeth from moving back to where they were when the braces were last adjusted. This is usually kept in for a period of six months with a monthly checkup within that time. Since it's been years from her last adjustment, the braces have served as an impromptu retainer. It's likely that the teeth have already adapted to their current position and do not require retainers. So unless the teeth are still misaligned, you can have them removed with no ill effects. If they ARE still misaligned, I suggest you consult with an orthodontist for possible treatment options. :)

Doc,

I got a question...

I got two impacted molars, and i wanna get rid of this coz the pain's killin' me. Magkano ba magpa-operate sayo coz i'm sick and tired of takin anibiotic pills everytime it aches.

...and may discount ba? coz i heard that a single operation could cost 5,000 bucks daw eh. :)

dj_flip03,

Yes, the procedure costs 5k per tooth. The reason for this is that it is a more involved procedure than the usual extraction. Incisions have to be made, and bone has to be drilled into, as well as he tooth. Safety precautions and care considerations are also doubled. I believe it's worth the trouble to go through the operation rather than suffer through days of agony tho. :D

And yes, I offer a 20% discount to MTC members. You can see more details in the Membership Benefits section. :D

hotheat,

There are many ways to get the teeth whiter. The easiest way is to use the commercial tooth whitening products available in the market. They will make your teeth whiter but the effects won't last as long. The more effective way to do this is to have your teeth bleached in a dental office. Not only does it last longer, the dentist will make sure all of your teeth are evenly whitened. So if some of your teeth are darker than others, after the procedure they will have an even shade. :D

Kumusat ka, OS?

A few questions po.

1. I need to get some crowns done, probably a bridge of four. It is my understanding that it doesn't matter how good the dentist , the technician who makes the crowns muat also be top class if the crowns are to last.

Must a standard ceramic crown be made on a gold, base or is an alloy the normal choice ?

Autoclaving. Do you autoclave your instruments and how essential do you see it,?

With many salamats,

Alabang_Boy,

Top class dental technicians definitely must be the order of the day. I certainly haven't had any major problems with the dental techs who service us, fortunately. :D While the metal coping can seem to be of higher quality if it was made of gold, it's actually the alloys that provide more durability and stability.

As for autoclaving, it's one of the essential methods for sterilization. In our office we use another method called dry-heat sterilization. It is equally effective when applied properly.

Hope this helps!
